 Another murder case filed against 43 Awami League members in Sylhet

Sylhet: Another case has been filed against former mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Anwaruzzaman, two MPs and 43 Awami League activists.


The case was filed at the Kotwali Model Police Station under the Murder and Explosives Act by Md. Abdus Salam Tipu, son of the deceased Mahmud Ali of Khujgirpur village in Balaganj, in connection with the attack and firing on a procession of BNP and its affiliated organizations in Sylhet.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station Md. Ziaul Haque confirmed this information. He said that in addition to former mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, 43 people including Awami League Central Organizing Secretary and former MP Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, Sylhet District Awami League Organizing Secretary and Sunamganj-1 MP Advocate Ranjit Sarkar have been named as accused in the case.
The other accused are: Sylhet Metropolitan Awami League Joint Secretary Bidhan Kumar Saha, former City Corporation Ward 3 Councilor Abul Kalam Azad Layek, former Zakiganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Lokman Ahmed, former CSIC Ward 23 Councilor Mostaq Ahmed, Metropolitan Swechchhasebak League Vice President Piyush Kanti Dey, Sylhet District Sports Association General Treasurer Mahi Uddin Selim, Metropolitan Swechchhasebak League President and former Ward Councilor Aftab Hossain Khan, District Chhatra League President Nazmul Islam and General Secretary Rahel Siraj, Metropolitan Chhatra League General Secretary Naeem Ahmed, Nasir Uddin alias Jali Nasir.

In addition, Sunamganj District Chhatra League Vice President Junaid Ahmod, Osmani Medical College Chhatra League President Saiful Islam, Ruhul Amin Shiplu of Chalibandar in the city, District Swechchhasebak League Joint Secretary Emdad Rahman, Metropolitan Awami League Joint Secretary and former Ward 20 Councilor Azadur Rahman Azad, Metropolitan Jubo League President Alam Khan Mukti, District Jubo League General Secretary Shamim Ahmed alias Unique Shamim, Former Metropolitan Chhatra League General Secretary Abdul Alim Tushar, Metropolitan Awami League Cultural Affairs Secretary Rajatkanti Gupta, Metropolitan Awami League Organizing Secretary Arman Ahmed Shiplu, Government College Chhatra League President and Ward 32 Councilor Ruhel Ahmed, Moglabazar Mansur Ahmed Chowdhury, Sayeed Ahmed Chowdhury, Shabiprabi Chhatra League Former Vice President Tariqul Islam Tarek.

In the statement, the plaintiff mentioned that on July 19 at around 2:15 pm, a protest procession was taken out by BNP and its affiliated organizations in Zindabazar in the city to protest the killing of students and public during the anti-discrimination student movement. At that time, cadres of Awami League and affiliated organizations in front of Madhuban Market surrounded the leaders and activists of BNP and affiliated organizations with firearms.

At one point, the accused opened fire with guns, assault rifles and shotguns. Many were injured. The bullets fired by the accused hit the plaintiff in the left eye. He received treatment in Dhaka with serious injuries. He went to India for eye surgery. Due to which the case was delayed.
